Road to Baraboo - An Intimate First Staging

Part of Merryall’s New Play Development Series

Merryall presents Road to Baraboo, by Paul Rajeckas, a new comedic work in its first staging.  This presentation offers audiences an early look at a play as it continues to take shape.

The cast for this performance includes Renée Jaworski and Matt Kent, the artistic directors of the internationally acclaimed Pilobolus Dance Theater. They will be joined by playwright and performer, Paul Rajeckas, whose solo work, Notes To The Motherland, was a featured part of Merryall’s 2025 Season. 

With artists known for their physical storytelling and inventive stage presence, Road to Baraboo promises a distinctive blend of comedy and movement.

STORY:

Road to Baraboo is about Benny and Chippy, two performers working a deli in Queens while trying to make it in their unique field of performance, physical theater. They dream of performing at the prestigious Confluence of the Best, in Baraboo, but their act, and their partnership, starts to fall apart after a tough review, a sudden firing, and the death of Benny’s father.

As they struggle to regroup, Benny learns that her father once came close to success with his own partner, Felix Weinerberger, before choosing a different life. When Weinerberger unexpectedly reappears, Benny and Chippy are forced to face hard questions about their work, their relationship, and what they’re willing to sacrifice to succeed.

Pushed to their limits, they discover that becoming truly great isn’t just about talent—it’s about trust, honesty, and showing up for each other. When a real opportunity finally appears, Benny must decide what matters more: the dream or the partnership that made it possible.

Blending humor, movement, and heart, Road to Baraboo explores partnership, legacy, and the spark performers spend a lifetime chasing.
